Inauguration of the Cascades, in the Bois de Boulogne, Paris, by the Emperor and Empress of... 1854 Creator: Unknown
Inauguration of the Cascades, in the Bois de Boulogne, Paris, by the Emperor and Empress of the French, 1854. The Inauguration consisted in the opening by the Emperor [Napoleon III] of the mouth of the conduit, and the loosening of the waters into the empty lake...when the lake was completely full, it presented a really beautiful picture, which bore no sign of having been produced by artificial means...The material employed...consisted of a species of lava...his Majesty went through the ceremony of loosening the waters, which at once fell in great volume over the rocks, forming a very magnificent and beautiful cascade...It now turns out, however, that the Clichy lava is not so impervious as was supposed. The water leaked away as fast as it came in, and now it has been resolved to make a concrete bottom, which will be a long, and an expensive work'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the grand inauguration of the Cascades in the Bois de Boulogne, Paris, in 1854. The scene is graced by the imperial presence of Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, who are seen opening the mouth of the conduit, releasing the waters into the empty lake. The Cascades, an engineering marvel of the time, were created using a unique material - a species of lava from Clichy. The inauguration ceremony consisted of the Emperor loosening the waters, which then cascaded magnificently over the rocks. However, the initial excitement was short-lived as it was soon discovered that the Clichy lava was not as impervious as initially believed. The water began leaking away just as fast as it was being introduced, leading to the decision to construct a concrete bottom instead. This was a long and expensive endeavor, but it ensured the longevity of the Cascades and their continued beauty for generations to come. The photograph captures the moment of triumph and innovation, with the imperial couple standing proudly before the newly formed cascade, oblivious to the challenges that lay ahead. The serene lake, now filled with water, presents a breathtaking scene that bears no sign of artificial intervention. The Cascades of the Bois de Boulogne, a symbol of imperial grandeur and engineering prowess, remain a beloved attraction in Paris to this day.
