EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Jan van der Heyden, a renowned Dutch Baroque-era painter, draughtsman, printmaker, and inventor. Taken around 1870 by H Sluyter, this image showcases the artist's distinguished appearance. Van der Heyden (1637-1712) was not only known for his artistic talent but also for his contributions to society. He revolutionized firefighting by improving the design of fire hoses and even authored the first manual on firefighting. His innovative mind extended beyond that as he designed an efficient streetlighting system for Amsterdam in 1669, which remained in use until 1840. This groundbreaking invention inspired other towns and cities both within the Netherlands and abroad to adopt similar systems. The photograph portrays Van der Heyden wearing traditional attire from the era—a cap atop his head with a dignified expression on his face. It offers a glimpse into his occupation as a firefighter while highlighting his significant role in advancing science and technology during the seventeenth century. This portrait is part of Nederlands Geschiedenis en Volksleven in Schetsen, an illustrated book by J van Lenner and J ter Gouw published in Leiden around 1870. The image has been preserved over time through meticulous engraving techniques employed by R Craeijvanger. As we admire this monochrome masterpiece captured by H Sluyter, we are reminded of Jan van der Heyden's lasting impact on art, innovation, and public safety during the Baroque era in Holland.
