EDITORS COMMENTS
John Mordaunt, Viscount Mordaunt (1630-1675): A Portrait of a 17th Century Aristocrat and Royalist Conspirator This engraving, titled 'John, Viscount Mordaunt; Obit 1675', was created by Robert Dunkarton in 1814. It is taken from the collection 'Portraits of characters illustrious in British History from the beginning of the reign of Henry the Eighth to the end of the reign of James the Second' published in London in 1815. The portrait depicts John Mordaunt, who was born in 1630 and held the title of Viscount Mordaunt. Mordaunt is shown wearing full armour, suggesting his military background. He was a prominent figure during the turbulent seventeenth century in England, a time marked by political instability and power struggles between the monarchy and Parliament. Mordaunt was a known royalist conspirator, and this portrait was likely created to commemorate his life and legacy. He was involved in several plots against the Stuart monarchs, including the Rye House Plot of 1683, which aimed to assassinate King Charles II and his brother, James, Duke of York. Mordaunt was eventually captured and executed for his role in the plot. Despite his controversial past, Mordaunt was a respected member of the English nobility. His portrait, created by the skilled hand of Robert Dunkarton, serves as a reminder of the complex political landscape of the seventeenth century and the role that figures like Mordaunt played in shaping British history.
