: The Fate of the German Cruiser Emden at the Coast of Koeling Nord, Cocos Islands, 1914. This evocative photograph captures the final moments of the German light cruiser SMS Emden as it lies beached and abandoned on the coast of Koeling Nord in the Cocos Islands, following its defeat in the Battle of the Cocos on November 9, 1914. The Emden, a Chatham-class cruiser, was a formidable vessel of the German Imperial Navy during World War I. However, it met its end at the hands of the Australian light cruiser HMAS Sydney, which surprised the Emden while it was attempting to refuel in the Indian Ocean. The image shows a group of sailors, some rowing oars and others paddling with paddles, making their way towards the stranded Emden. The cruiser's once proud and powerful silhouette is now marred by the damage inflicted during the battle, with its masts and rigging lying broken and twisted on the shore. The sea around the Emden is calm, adding to the sense of stillness and finality.
