Leaving the Oasis, 1880s. Creator: Jean-Leon Gerome (French, 1824-1904)
Leaving the Oasis, 1880s. Leaving the Oasis repeats several themes in Geromes art--camel caravans, oases, and expansive desert landscapes. As an academic realist, Gerome painted everyday scenes in a meticulous and polished style. Here he carefully rendered the unique forms of the figures dress and the camels physical features, as well as the colours of the changing sky and the violet shadows cast by the airborne dogs and the legs of the camels. Although the pictures smoothness and detail suggest a photographic image, Gerome actually composed his paintings in the studio, basing them on memories and sketches from his visits to the Near East. Following his first trip to Egypt in 1856, he developed into a major figure among 19th-century " Orientalists" --artists who specialized in representing Near Eastern life, culture, and landscapes

Leaving the Oasis, 1880s
EDITORS COMMENTS
by Jean-Leon Gerome captures the essence of Orientalism in its depiction of a camel caravan departing from an oasis. As a renowned academic realist, Gerome meticulously portrays the everyday scene with his polished style and attention to detail. The painting showcases several recurring themes in Gerome's art, including camels, oases, and vast desert landscapes. The figures' attire and the physical features of the camels are rendered with precision, while the changing sky's colors and violet shadows cast by airborne dogs and camel legs add depth to the composition. Although "Leaving the Oasis" appears almost photographic due to its smoothness and meticulousness, it is important to note that Gerome composed this piece in his studio using memories and sketches from his travels to the Near East. His first trip to Egypt in 1856 marked a turning point for him as he became one of the leading figures among 19th-century Orientalists. This particular print of "Leaving the Oasis" is part of Heritage Art/Heritage Images collection held by The Cleveland Museum of Art. It exemplifies Gerome's mastery in capturing not only visual accuracy but also evoking emotions associated with exotic lands like those found in North Africa or Arabia.
