Maiwand - Saving the Guns, (1901). The Battle of Maiwand in Afghanistan took place on 27 July 1880 during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. Emir Ayub Khan and Malalai of Maiwand, a woman, defeated a British brigade. Malalai rallied local fighters and fought alongside the Emir, resulting in the Afghan victory. Although the British lost, they managed to capture some of the enemy artillery. After Maiwand 1880: Saving the Guns, painting made in 1882, in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
