The Margate Station of the East Kent (London, Chatham, and Dover) Railway, 1864. Creator: Unknown
The Margate Station of the East Kent (London, Chatham, and Dover) Railway, 1864. View of the new station...recently built by Messrs. Peto and Betts from the designs of Mr. John Newton...The central feature of the building is an elegant covered way over the main entrance. The recessed portion is occupied by the general waiting-room...On the right are the first and second class waiting and refreshment rooms and the station master's residence; on the left are the third-class waiting-rooms and station offices. The elevations of the building show a judicious employment of red and yellow brick, with ornamental arches...On the extreme left is the tank-house, and to the right are the buildings attached to the locomotive and carriage departments...The direct line...connecting London with the towns of Margate, Broadstairs, and Ramsgate...has been largely patronised by the public in consequence of its providing a shorter route from the metropolis to those places by from seventeen to twenty-seven miles over any previously established system...by means of this new railway three of the most popular seaside resorts are opened up to Londoners under peculiarly favourable circumstances'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the grandeur and elegance of The Margate Station of the East Kent (London, Chatham, and Dover) Railway in 1864. Designed by Mr. John Newton and built by Messrs. Peto and Betts, this new station is a marvel of Victorian architecture.
The central feature of the building is an exquisite covered way over the main entrance, leading to various waiting rooms, refreshment areas, and station offices. The use of red and yellow brick with ornamental arches adds a touch of sophistication to the structure.
The railway line connecting London with Margate, Broadstairs, and Ramsgate has been a popular choice for travelers due to its shorter route compared to other systems. This new railway has opened up three beloved seaside resorts to Londoners in a convenient and efficient manner.
From the tank-house on the left to the locomotive and carriage departments on the right, every aspect of this station exudes charm and functionality. It's no wonder that this station has been widely patronized by the public since its opening.
This print serves as a timeless reminder of a bygone era when railway stations were not just places for transportation but also architectural masterpieces that captured people's imagination.
