EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 18th century portrait captures Maria Theresa Walburga Amalia Christina, Archduchess of Austria, Queen of Hungary and Bohemia, and Holy Roman Empress, in her regal splendor. Painted by the renowned Swiss artist Jean-Etienne Liotard (1702-1789), this miniature painting on enamel on copper, titled "Maria Theresa, Archduchess of Austria, Queen of Hungary and Bohemia, and Holy Roman Empress," was created in 1747. The Archduchess, dressed in richly colored and intricately detailed clothing, wears a fur-trimmed gown adorned with jewels and a grand brooch. Her regal bearing and piercing gaze convey her strong and confident leadership. Born in Vienna in 1717, Maria Theresa ascended to the throne of the Habsburg Monarchy at the age of 23 following the death of her father, Emperor Charles VI. She ruled over an extensive domain that included the Austrian Empire, Hungary, Bohemia, and the Holy Roman Empire. Her reign was marked by significant military and political achievements, as well as cultural and artistic patronage. This portrait, a testament to the artistic and cultural heritage of Europe during the 18th century, is a reminder of the power and influence of the Habsburg Monarchy during this period. It is also a stunning example of the intricate and detailed fashion of the time, with its vibrant colors, luxurious fabrics, and elegant jewelry. The portrait is believed to have been painted in the Netherlands, reflecting the international influence and reach of Liotard's artistic career. Today, this precious work of art is housed in a museum, where it continues to inspire and captivate visitors with its beauty and historical significance.
