EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1917, captures a group of African American children and teachers at the Penn School on St. Helena Island, South Carolina. Established in 1865 by the American Missionary Association, the Penn School was one of the first schools for formerly enslaved people in the South. The children, dressed in their Sunday best, are seated and standing underneath the shade of a large tree, engaged in a lesson with their teachers. The serene setting of the school, surrounded by lush trees and greenery, contrasts with the stark reality of segregation and inequality that was prevalent in the United States during that time. The image is a poignant reminder of the importance of education and the resilience of the African American community in the face of adversity. The photograph is part of the Jean Blackwell Hutson Research and Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library. The exact identity of the creator of this photomechanical print remains unknown, but their work serves as an invaluable contribution to the documentation of African American history and heritage.
