Meer Heidayut Ali, Rissaldar (Native Captain) 4th Regiment of the Bengal Irregular Horse, 1858. Creator: Unknown

Meer Heidayut Ali, Rissaldar (Native Captain) 4th Regiment of the Bengal Irregular Horse, 1858. Engraving from a sketch by Major-General Carmichael. At a time when our native troops in India have in general behaved so ill, it is cheering to find that a few of them whom we formerly cherished and placed confidence in have done honour to the service to which they belong. Prominent among those who have proved faithful to their trust is...Meer Heidayut Ali, Rissaldar...a Mahomedan, observing strictly the rites of his religion...When the Bhurtpore troops mutinied, the European...fugitives came to Mahona. They were received by Rissaldar Heidayut Ali with all that courtesy which a Mahomedan gentleman knows so well how to assume, and such as he would have displayed in the palmiest days of the raj to a party of English, comprising among its members ladies and officers of high rank'. Hedayat Ali was the first Indian career army officer who reached the rank of a Lieutenant Colonel in the British Indian army. He was aide-de-camp to the Prince of Wales during the royal visit to India in 1875-1876. From "Illustrated London News", 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image, we encounter Meer Heidayut Ali, a Rissaldar, or Native Captain, of the 4th Regiment of the Bengal Irregular Horse in India during the tumultuous year of 1858. Amidst a backdrop of widespread unrest and mutiny among native troops, Meer Heidayut Ali stands out as a beacon of loyalty and honor to the British Raj. The engraving, derived from a sketch by Major-General Carmichael, portrays Meer Heidayut Ali in his military uniform, adorned with decorations and insignia of his rank. His stern yet resolute expression conveys a sense of duty and commitment to the service he belonged to, despite the challenges that engulfed his homeland. At a time when the faith in native troops in India was at an all-time low, Meer Heidayut Ali's unwavering allegiance to the British was a source of encouragement. A devout Mahomedan, he strictly adhered to the tenets of his religion, making him a remarkable figure in the context of the turbulent events unfolding around him. When the Bhurtpore troops mutinied, Meer Heidayut Ali extended a warm welcome to the European fugitives who sought refuge in Mahona. His courteous reception, reminiscent of the palmiest days of the Raj, was a testament to the refined manners and hospitality that a Mahomedan gentleman was expected to display. Meer Heidayut Ali's exceptional service to the British Indian army culminated in his promotion to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, making him the first Indian career army officer to achieve this milestone. He also served as an aide-de-camp to the Prince of Wales during the royal visit to India in 1875-1876. This evocative image of Meer Heidayut Ali serves as a poignant reminder of the complex and multifaceted relationship between the British and the native population in India during the colonial era. Despite the challenges and adversities, there were individuals like Meer Heidayut Ali who upheld the values of loyalty, duty, and honor, thereby leaving an indelible mark on history.
