Mr. Pixley, of the Victoria Rifles, winner of the Queen's Prize at the National Rifle Contest, 1862. Creator: Unknown

Mr. Pixley, of the Victoria Rifles, winner of the Queen's Prize at the National Rifle Contest, 1862. This gentleman is by no means an undistinguished rifleman, having fairly earned his marksman's badge at Hythe last year, where he likewise won his sectional prize. He has further carried off honours in the shooting of his own company (No. 1) of the Victoria, besides obtaining a rifle offered by some private donor. Mr. Pixley, however, had by no means a walk over, as he was pressed hard by two men in his own squad, and at the close of the firing had only two points to spare. He was, of course, loudly cheered when the figures were announced, and the members of the Victoria Corps, who mustered strongly in camp, bore their man on their shoulders in triumph across the common'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print features Mr. Pixley, a distinguished rifleman of the Victoria Rifles, proudly holding his Queen's Prize from the National Rifle Contest of 1862. Mr. Pixley's accomplishments extend beyond this prestigious award, as he had previously earned a marksman's badge at Hythe and won his sectional prize in the same year. Furthermore, he obtained a rifle as a prize from a private donor within his own company (No. 1) of the Victoria Corps. The image portrays Mr. Pixley in his full military regalia, including a dark, fitted uniform jacket, trousers, and a tall, peaked cap adorned with a badge. His beard, neatly groomed and full, frames his stern yet triumphant expression. The background of the print is simple, with a green landscape and a few trees, drawing the focus to the determined figure of Mr. Pixley. The caption from the Illustrated London News, dated 1862, describes Mr. Pixley's impressive achievements at the rifle contest. Despite facing stiff competition from two men within his squad, he emerged as the victor, with only a two-point advantage. The members of the Victoria Corps, who were present in great numbers, carried their hero on their shoulders in a triumphant procession across the common. This evocative print offers a glimpse into the 19th-century military culture, showcasing the dedication, skill, and camaraderie of the riflemen during this era. The intricate engraving and attention to detail further enhance the historical significance and aesthetic appeal of the image.
