New School-Church of St. Peter's, Stepney, 1857. Creator: Unknown

New School-Church of St. Peter's, Stepney, [East London], 1857. This building, as its name denotes, includes the work of a school, and a means of bringing home to the labouring classes the services of the Church...The district consists of 13, 000, mostly of poor and labouring people...and this room will enable the active and energetic pastor...to assist and instruct those who from various causes do not go to church...The cost of the building is £1550. It was built by Mr. Charles Barry, and is a fine and well-proportioned room...it is hoped that the amount still due on account of this useful and necessary work, will be raised to ease the anxieties of the clergyman, and that some of the richer members of the Church of England will send help to this poor district, in which so arduous a task is being so actively set about. It deserves confidence and help'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1857, showcases the New School-Church of St. Peter's in Stepney, East London. The name of the building reflects its dual purpose: a place of worship and a school for the local community. The district where this church stands was home to approximately 13,000 residents, most of whom were poor and laboring people. The church aimed to provide spiritual guidance and education to those who, for various reasons, could not attend regular church services. The cost of constructing this building was £1550, and it was designed by the renowned architect, Mr. Charles Barry. The room depicted in the photograph is a fine and well-proportioned space, which would have enabled the active and energetic pastor to assist and instruct those in need. The construction of this building was a significant undertaking, and it is hoped that the remaining funds required to complete the project would be raised to alleviate the financial burden on the clergyman. The photograph was published in the Illustrated London News in 1857, providing a glimpse into the social and architectural landscape of the time. The caption expresses the hope that the wealthier members of the Church of England would extend their support to this impoverished district, where such a vital and necessary project was being undertaken with great enthusiasm. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the importance of community, education, and faith, and the role they play in uplifting the lives of the less fortunate.
