EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Old Manor-House, Morley, Leeds, West Yorkshire" which holds great historical significance as the birthplace of Sir Titus Salt. Born in 1803 and passing away in 1876, Sir Titus Salt was a remarkable figure who revolutionized the textile industry with his innovative method of blending alpaca wool with cotton and silk. However, it is perhaps his most enduring legacy that truly sets him apart. Saltaire Mill near Bradford stands as a testament to his visionary spirit. Alongside this magnificent mill, he built an entire model company town called Saltaire for his workers. This unique community provided not only employment but also essential amenities such as shops and a library. Interestingly enough, one notable absence from Saltaire was public houses since Sir Titus Salt himself was a teetotaller. His commitment to creating a wholesome environment for his employees shines through in this decision. The print captures the grandeur of The Old Manor-House itself—a stunning Victorian-era building that exudes elegance and charm. Its architectural beauty is enhanced by the monochrome presentation, lending an air of timelessness to this piece. Preserved within this engraving from Great Industries of Great Britain (published around 1880), we are transported back to the bustling industrial landscape of 19th-century Britain—where innovation met tradition and where visionaries like Sir Titus Salt left an indelible mark on history.
