EDITORS COMMENTS
This image captures the grandeur and excitement of the Opening of the Spanish Cortes, or the Spanish Parliament, in Madrid in 1850. The photograph, which is a rare engraving from Illustrated London News, documents the royal procession as it makes its way to the newly built Palacio de las Cortes, the seat of the Spanish parliament. The public was granted access for the first time to witness this historic event. The scene is set with the divisions of the garrison leading the way, their bands playing as they march through the crowd and take up their positions. The procession itself is a sight to behold, with carriages carrying Queen Isabella II and other members of the Royal household, as well as a squadron of cavalry. The neoclassical architecture of the Palace of Congress serves as a stunning backdrop to the patriotic celebration. The image is a testament to the grandeur and pageantry of the 19th century, a time when such events were met with great fanfare and enthusiasm. The crowd, both in the foreground and lining the streets of Calle Zorrilla, are a sea of people eager to witness history in the making. The Opening of the Spanish Cortes marked a significant moment in Spanish political history, and this photograph offers a unique glimpse into this important event.
