Papal Palace, Avignon, France, 1937. Artist: Martin Hurlimann
Papal Palace, Avignon, France, 1937. In 1309 Pope Clement V chose Avignon as his residence, and the city remained the seat of the papacy until 1377. The building of the Gothic Papal Palace, situated on a rocky outcrop overlooking the River Rhone, was begun in 1335 during the papacy of Benedict XII and completed in 1364. After the papacy returned to Rome the building remained papal property but gradually fell into disrepair. The palace became a museum in 1906, since when the building has undergone extensive restoration. Illustration from Frankreich: Baukunst, Landschaft Und Volksleben, a work on French architecture, landscape and people by Martin Hurlimann, (Berlin, 1937)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of the Papal Palace in Avignon, France, taken in 1937 by artist Martin Hurlimann. The Papal Palace holds a significant place in history as it served as the residence for Pope Clement V and remained the seat of the papacy from 1309 to 1377. Built during the 14th century, this Gothic masterpiece sits majestically on a rocky outcrop overlooking the River Rhone. Its construction began under Benedict XII's papacy and was completed under Urban V. However, after the papacy returned to Rome, neglect gradually took its toll on this magnificent structure. Throughout history, this iconic palace faced numerous challenges - it was sacked during the French Revolution and later used as a barracks and prison during Napoleon's reign. Fortunately, in 1906 it was transformed into a museum that showcases its rich heritage. Over time, extensive restoration efforts have breathed new life into this architectural marvel. Today, visitors can explore its medieval towers and admire its intricate design elements while immersing themselves in centuries of religious history. Martin Hurlimann's illustration from his work "Frankreich: Baukunst, Landschaft Und Volksleben" beautifully captures not only the physical beauty of this landmark but also highlights its historical significance within French architecture and landscape. This stunning photograph serves as a timeless reminder of Avignon's role as an important center for Catholicism during one of Europe's most transformative periods.
