EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 17th century oil on canvas painting, titled "Perseus and Medusa" by the Neapolitan artist Luca Giordano (1632-1705), is a captivating representation of a pivotal moment in Greek mythology. The scene depicts the hero Perseus, clad in armor and brandishing the severed head of the Gorgon Medusa, who is shown in the lower left corner of the canvas, her petrifying gaze fixed on the ground. The painting is a testament to the Baroque period's love for allegory and literature, as well as its penchant for lyricism and drama. Perseus' triumphant victory over Medusa, a monstrous serpent-haired creature who could turn anyone who looked at her directly into stone, is a popular theme in both ancient poetry and art. The story is recounted in Ovid's "Metamorphoses," a seminal work of Latin literature. In this painting, Giordaso masterfully captures the moment of triumph and the contrasting emotions of fear, awe, and victory. The painting also features other elements of the myth, such as Perseus' winged horse Pegasus, who carries the hero's love interest, Andromeda, on his back. In the upper right corner, we see Phineas, the priest of Delphi, who aided Perseus in his quest by giving him the mirrored shield that allowed him to look at Medusa's reflection and avoid being turned to stone. The painting's rich colors, dynamic composition, and intricate details are a testament to Giordano's skill as a painter and his deep understanding of the mythological tradition. This painting, now a cherished masterpiece in the Collection of the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples, Italy, is a reminder of the enduring power of Greek mythology and the artistic legacy of the Baroque period.
