EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collection of exquisite plaster ornaments from the 17th and 18th centuries in France. The creator of these magnificent pieces remains unknown, adding an air of mystery to their allure. Figures 1 to 7 depict various examples of ornate decorations, each representing a distinct style popular during different periods. Fig 1 exhibits panel decorations found at door and window niches in the throne room of the Castle at Fontainebleau, showcasing the opulent style synonymous with Louis XIV's reign. Moving on to Fig 2, we are presented with projecting plane patterns adorning panels within the queens bed-chamber at the same castle, again reflecting Louis XIV's distinctive aesthetic. Fig 3 offers a glimpse into wood carving from a wainscot in Chateau de Bercy, further exemplifying Louis XIV's influence. Figures 4 and 5 showcase intricate capitals - one from a mirror in the state-room of Hotel de Lauzun and another designed by German Master Paul Decker - both epitomizing Louis XIV's signature style. Continuing onto Fig 6 and Fig 7, we witness architectural elements inspired by Louis XV's era. The former displays a capital located in the Salle des Medallions at Palace Versailles while the latter presents us with an elegant corner frame from Queen Marie Antoinette’s bed chamber. Lastly, Fig 8 introduces us to an architectural piece reminiscent of Louis XV's design sensibilities as depicted by A. Rosis in his work "The Historic Styles of Ornament". This remarkable print serves as a testament to France’s rich artistic heritage and provides viewers with an opportunity to appreciate these timeless masterpieces up close.
