The Prince of Wales in Canada - His Royal Highness descending a timber-slide at Ottawa - from a sketch by our special artist, G. H. Andrews, 1860. A slide...is an inclined plane, with several feet of water rushing over it, forming a waterway down which the crib can pass without damage, thus avoiding waterfalls like the Chaudiere, where they would be broken and the timber injured. A crib consists of sticks of timber of any length, forming a small raft...[which] goes down the slide with great velocity, the water rushing over the forward part and sometimes dashing over the men upon it. On each side of the slide...were thousands of people...When the Royal crib got under way and shot past or below them these people cheered and waved their handkerchiefs, and the most intense excitement prevailed; for, although there is really little danger, yet accidents sometimes happen...And when Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, was to undergo this experience, how much greater than usual was the interest taken in the running of the crib. Everything, luckily, went well, both with the Prince's raft and with that which was carrying the leading members of the press immediately following. The whole of both parties were delighted'. In this photograph from 1860, His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, is seen descending a timber-slide at Ottawa, Canada. The image is derived from a sketch by G.H. Andrews, providing a vivid account of this historic moment. A slide, as depicted in this scene, is an inclined plane with several feet of water rushing over it, forming a waterway. This ingenious contraption allows a crib, a small raft made of timber sticks, to pass without damage, bypassing waterfalls that could potentially harm the timber. The crib, manned by individuals, goes down the slide with great velocity, the water rushing over the forward part and sometimes even dashing against the men upon it. Thousands of people gathered on either side of the slide, eagerly anticipating the event. When the Royal crib, carrying the Prince of Wales, began its descent, the excitement reached a fever pitch. The crowd cheered and waved their handkerchiefs, creating an atmosphere of intense excitement. Despite the inherent risks, accidents were known to occur. However, on this day, both the Prince's raft and that of the leading members of the press, following closely behind, navigated the slide safely, resulting in delight for all involved. This photograph, taken from the pages of the Illustrated London News, offers a unique glimpse into the past, showcasing the Prince's adventurous spirit and the thrill of this unconventional mode of transportation in the mid-19th century.
