The Prince of Wales at Malta: a Street in Valetta, 1876. Creator: C.R
The Prince of Wales at Malta: a Street in Valetta, 1876. The streets of Malta are very steep, and they are paved with steps...The facility of cutting the fine, soft sandstone of the island has led to a solid kind of building; hence the houses have a good architectural appearance. They have projecting windows in front, resting on stone brackets. These are like the balconies in Cairo and other towns along the coast of Africa. The women of Malta wear what seems to be at first sight a petticoat over their heads, but it is only a veil, which is puckered slightly in front. It is usually of black silk, and is called the "onnella". From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in time as HRH Prince Albert Edward, later King Edward VII of Great Britain and Ireland, makes a royal visit to the Mediterranean island of Malta in 1876. The Prince, dressed in formal attire and wearing a top hat, is seen strolling down a narrow, steep street in the capital city of Valletta. The architecture of the buildings around him is striking, with their solid construction from the local soft sandstone and projecting windows adorned with stone brackets, reminiscent of balconies in African coastal towns. The women of Malta are depicted wearing traditional attire, with their heads covered by a petticoat-like veil, known as the 'onnella'. This garment, usually made of black silk, is puckered in front and serves as both a fashion statement and a sign of modesty. The men, barefoot and dressed in simple clothing, are seen going about their daily business, some carrying heavy loads or tending to lamps for the Prince's procession. The scene is set against the backdrop of Maltese culture and history, with the distinctive architecture reflecting the island's rich heritage and the religious influences evident in the presence of a priest and a statue of St. John the Baptist. The photograph, taken by the renowned illustrator C.R for the Illustrated London News, offers a unique glimpse into the past and the everyday life of Malta during the 19th century.
