EDITORS COMMENTS
Princess Beatrice's Generous Gift: A Historic Moment in Cowes, Isle of Wight". In this photo print, we witness a significant moment in the history of Cowes, Isle of Wight. Princess Beatrice, the youngest daughter of Queen Victoria and Royal Governor of the island at that time, stands proudly outside Northwood House in 1929. The grand manor house looms behind her as a symbol of elegance and heritage. On September 4th, amidst an excited crowd of townspeople gathered to witness this historic event, Princess Beatrice accepted the deed to Northwood House and its sprawling grounds from Captain Ward. With grace and generosity befitting her royal status, she then handed over the deeds to Mr F. W. Beken, Chairman of Cowes Urban District Council. This act marked a turning point for Northwood House as it was now dedicated to serving the community. The condition attached to this generous donation was clear - the house would become municipal offices while its picturesque 26-acre pleasure park would transform into public gardens for all residents to enjoy. The photograph captures not only Princess Beatrice's philanthropic spirit but also showcases Kirk & Sons' exceptional talent in capturing historical moments through their lens. As we gaze upon this image today, we are reminded of Princess Beatrice's legacy as well as the enduring beauty and significance of Northwood House within British history.
