EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning oil painting captures a historic moment in European monarchy history: The Princess of Orange, Anna Pavlovna (1805-1865), receiving Grand Duke Alexander II of Russia, future Emperor Alexander II (1818-1881), in the Czar Peter's House in Zaandam, Netherlands, on April 17, 1839. The Princess of Orange, a granddaughter of Tsar Paul I of Russia, was a significant figure in Dutch and Russian royalty. She had been exiled to the Netherlands after her father's assassination in 1801 and later married the future King William II of the Netherlands. Alexander II, then the heir to the Russian throne, was on a diplomatic mission to the Netherlands, where he was received with great pomp and ceremony. In this painting by Christiaan Julius Lodewijk Portman (1802-1866), we see the two royals exchanging pleasantries, their formal attire and regal bearing on full display. The painting's rich colors and intricate details bring the scene to life, transporting us back to a time of grandeur and tradition. The painting is a testament to the complex web of European royal relationships and alliances, as well as the artistic skill of Portman, a prominent Dutch painter of the time. Today, it is a cherished piece of heritage art, housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where it continues to captivate visitors with its historical significance and artistic merit.
