The Queen's Visit to the East End of London: Triumphal Arch in Whitechapel-Road, 1876. Her Majesty went...to open the new wing of the London Hospital buildings in Whitechapel-road. It was a high festival for the East End of London...At the City boundary a large triumphal arch, forty feet high, spanning the roadway, had been erected. It was handsomely decorated with flags, and bore on the Aldgate side the inscription, "Welcome to our Queen"...The word "Welcome" occurred repeatedly, sometimes with the addition of "Come again, " and "Thanks for this visit"...The strains of " God Save the Queen, " played by each band in succession as the regiments " presented arms, " were followed by cheers...Where the crowds were most dense the cheers were most hearty...From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the jubilant atmosphere during Queen Victoria's visit to the East End of London in 1876. The monarch, who was also known as the Empress of India, made her way to open the new wing of the London Hospital buildings in Whitechapel-road. The East End of London was abuzz with excitement as the City boundary was adorned with a grand triumphal arch, standing forty feet high and spanning the roadway. The arch was handsomely decorated with an array of flags, bearing the inscription "Welcome to our Queen" on the Aldgate side. The word "Welcome" was repeated frequently, sometimes accompanied by "Come again" and "Thanks for this visit." The strains of "God Save the Queen" played by each band in succession as the regiments presented arms were met with hearty cheers from the dense crowds. The photograph, published in the Illustrated London News, depicts a scene of patriotic fervor as people of all ages and genders gathered to catch a glimpse of their sovereign. Military personnel stood proudly at attention, while horse-drawn carriages and vehicles transported the royalty through the triumphal arch. The horse-drawn carriage, pulled by a team of powerful horses, adds to the grandeur of the moment. The intricately designed triumphal arch, with its banners and standards, stands as a testament to the architectural prowess of the era. The image, though unattributed, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the people of London came together to celebrate their monarch.
