Rest (?), 1881. Artist: Joseph Swain

Rest (?), 1881. A British Farmer looks down upon the resting Liberal Prime Minister, Gladstone. On the floor is the Irish Land Act. This Act had taken virtually all available debating time in the Commons over the past five months before being passed at the end of August 1881. Indeed it was almost the only result of the recent session and, as soon as it had been passed, the Session came to an end. It had been one of the longest of the current century. However, the farmer wonders when he and his industry will receive such attention. From Punch, or the London Charivari, September 3, 1881

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Rest (?), 1881" artist Joseph Swain captures a moment of contemplation and exhaustion in the political landscape of 19th-century Britain. The scene depicts a British farmer, his face etched with weariness, looking down upon the resting Liberal Prime Minister, William Ewart Gladstone. Symbolically placed on the floor is the Irish Land Act, which had consumed much of Parliament's time before its recent passage. The cartoon serves as a satirical commentary on the neglect faced by those involved in agriculture while politicians engage in lengthy debates and legislation. As one of the longest sessions of that century comes to an end, the farmer wonders when his industry will receive such attention from lawmakers. Swain's engraving skillfully portrays both fatigue and frustration through intricate details and expressive lines. The monochrome composition adds depth to this powerful image, emphasizing its historical significance. "Rest (?), 1881" not only highlights societal concerns but also showcases Swain's talent as an artist alongside renowned illustrator John Tenniel. Together they shed light on important political issues through their thought-provoking caricatures. This heritage image partnership between creators Joseph Swain and John Tenniel immortalizes a critical moment in history while reminding us of the enduring power of satire as a means to critique society's shortcomings.
