EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the powerful symbolism of a Roman Eagle, standing tall as a tribute to the brave Flying Men of the Great War. Taken in 1935 at the Royal Air Force Memorial on Whitehall Steps in London, this image transports us back to an era when sacrifice and heroism were etched into every corner of society. Designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield and sculpted by William Reid Dick, this magnificent monument stands as a solemn reminder of all ranks from various branches of the British Empire's air forces who gave their lives during World War I. Made from elegant Portland stone, it exudes strength and resilience against the backdrop of bustling city life. The bronze eagle perched atop its globe represents not only freedom but also victory for King and Country. Its outstretched wings seem ready to take flight once more, symbolizing both remembrance and hope for future generations. As we gaze upon this architectural marvel nestled along the Thames Embankment, we are reminded that war leaves an indelible mark on history. This memorial serves as a testament to those who fought valiantly in defense of their nation's ideals. Captured within these monochrome tones is not just a photograph but also a poignant narrative that speaks volumes about courage, sacrifice, and unity.
