EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled 'The Royal Visit to India: waiting for the Shahzadah, Gwalior...1876,' showcases a group of eager townspeople in India, anticipating the arrival of the Prince of Wales, later known as King Edward VII. The future monarch had gone to visit the Maharaja Scindia at Gwalior, a city located in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The crowd, comprised of men and women, is gathered near a balcony, their faces concealed behind various forms of headdresses and clothing, as they eagerly await the sight of the Prince. The term 'Shahzaada' translates to 'prince' in Persian, reflecting the rich cultural influences present in India during the British colonial era. The people's excitement is palpable, with some gesturing and hiding their faces in anticipation. This photograph, taken from a sketch by William Simpson for the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the grandeur and pageantry of a royal visit during the 19th century. The architectural features of the buildings and grandstands in the background further emphasize the regal atmosphere of the occasion.
