Sappers repairing the road between Schumla and Varna, 1854. Creator: Unknown

Sappers repairing the road between Schumla and Varna, 1854. British soldiers during the Crimean War. The fortified town of Schumla, now Shumen in Bulgaria, was strategically important, and was used as a headquarters by Ottoman Turkish forces. View of...a party of Sappers repairing the road, between Schumla and Varna, preparatory to the march of the army. The march of the first division from the neighbourhood of Varna to Aladyn, with the thermometer from 80 to 90, must have given the troops a tolerably good sample of Turkish campaigning. The roads, even after all that had been done to them, by the Sappers and Miners, were in the most primitive state, so that it is not surprising that the journey should have occupied pretty nearly double the time ordinarily calculated for performing the same distance, in heavy marching order'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, created in the mid-19th century, depicts a group of British Sappers diligently repairing the road between Schumla and Varna during the Crimean War. The strategic importance of Schumla, now known as Shumen in Bulgaria, made it a crucial headquarters for Ottoman Turkish forces. In the background, we see a bullock cart and oxen, likely used for transporting supplies and equipment. The Sappers, members of the Royal Engineers regiment, are seen working on the road with pickaxes, shovels, and wheelbarrows. The scene is described in the "Illustrated London News" of 1854 as preparatory to the march of the army. The harsh conditions of the Turkish campaign are evident, with temperatures ranging from 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite the efforts of the Sappers and Miners, the roads were still in a primitive state, making the journey from Varna to Aladyn significantly longer than usual. This evocative image offers a glimpse into the challenging conditions and hard work that defined military engineering during the Crimean War.
