The Ship off Pram Point, Just Before Leaving for the North, c1908, (1909)

The Ship off Pram Point, Just Before Leaving for the North, c1908, (1909). The Nimrod just visible in the vast icy sea. Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the ship off Pram Point just before departing for the North in 1908. The image showcases the vast icy sea, with only a glimpse of the Nimrod visible amidst the frozen landscape. This historic moment is associated with renowned Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton, who made significant contributions to Antarctic exploration. During his second expedition from 1907 to 1909, Shackleton and three companions achieved an unprecedented feat by reaching Farthest South latitude at 88° S. Their remarkable journey fell short of merely 97 geographical miles from the elusive South Pole, marking it as one of the most substantial advancements towards this uncharted territory in history. In addition to this accomplishment, members of Shackleton's team also conquered Mount Erebus, an active volcano situated in Antarctica. For his extraordinary achievements during these expeditions, King Edward VII knighted Shackleton. However, tragedy struck during his third and final oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition when he passed away at age 47. The illustration featured here is taken from "The Heart of the Antarctic". Volume I by E. H. Shackleton C. V. O. , published by William Heinemann in London in 1909. It offers a glimpse into this pivotal moment in exploration history that forever shaped our understanding of Antarctica's geography and its extreme conditions.
