EDITORS COMMENTS
Image 5 of 7: Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma Adoring Kali (c1740) This exquisite 18th century artwork, titled "Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma Adoring Kali," is an opaque watercolor, gold, silver, and ink drawing on paper, originating from the Basohli region in the Indian states of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. The artwork depicts the three major Hindu deities, Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma, in a humble and reverent posture before the many-armed and many-limbed Goddess Kali. Kali, the Goddess of time, creation, and destruction, is seated in a cross-legged position, her body adorned with various ornaments and jewelry. Her multiple arms, each holding a different object, symbolize her various aspects and powers. The Goddess's fierce expression and the depiction of her tongue protruding from her mouth signify her destructive nature. The three gods, Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma, are shown in a submissive posture, paying homage to Kali. Shiva, the god of destruction and regeneration, is depicted with a third eye, a serene expression, and a crescent moon on his head. Vishnu, the preserver, is shown with four arms, holding a conch shell, a discus, a lotus flower, and a mace. Brahma, the creator, is depicted with four heads and four arms, holding a book, a rosary, a lotus flower, and a water pot. This artwork, which is now part of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's collection, is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of India and Southeast Asia. The intricate details and the use of gold, silver, and ink on paper make this artwork a visual feast for the eyes and a reminder of the deep-rooted religious and cultural traditions of the region.
