SS Great Eastern, 1859
SS Great Eastern, 1859. Pictured at the port of Le Havre, France. Isambard Kingdom Brunel proposed to the Eastern Steam Navigation Company the construction of a steamship five or six times the size of any then in use. It would use two forms of power: paddle-wheels and screw-engines. Constructed from iron at Millwall, London, between 1853 and 1858, the Great Eastern was the largest vessel afloat until she was broken up in 1888. Only in 1899 were her dimensions exceeded by the SS Oceanic. The Great Eastern was not a success as a passenger vessel and was sold for a fraction of her building cost. She was used as a cable-laying ship, most notably laying the Transatlantic telegraph cable in 1865-1866

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic SS Great Eastern, a groundbreaking steamship that revolutionized the shipping industry in the 19th century. The photograph captures the vessel at the port of Le Havre, France, where it stands as a testament to Isambard Kingdom Brunel's visionary engineering prowess. Brunel proposed an audacious idea to the Eastern Steam Navigation Company: constructing a steamship five or six times larger than any other ship of its time. The SS Great Eastern was not only colossal in size but also innovative in design, utilizing both paddle-wheels and screw-engines for propulsion. Constructed from iron between 1853 and 1858 in London's Millwall, this magnificent vessel held the title of being the largest ship on Earth until its demise in 1888 when it was dismantled. It wasn't until 1899 that another ship surpassed its dimensions with the SS Oceanic. Although not successful as a passenger vessel due to various challenges, including financial setbacks, the SS Great Eastern found new purpose as a cable-laying ship. Its most notable achievement was laying down the Transatlantic telegraph cable between 1865 and 1866. This monochrome print transports us back to an era defined by innovation and ambition. It serves as a powerful reminder of humanity's relentless pursuit of progress and our ability to push boundaries even when faced with adversity.
