Tchorgoun, on the Tchornaya, 1856. Creator: Unknown
Tchorgoun, on the Tchornaya, 1856. Village on the Chorna river, Crimea. A few days previously to the 25th October, General Liprandi assembled a large force near the villages of Tchorgouna and Kamara, where it was in some measure screened from view by a range of hills. The presence of this force was no secret in the English Camp; and, as it threatened to interrupt the communications between the harbour and the lines encompassing Sebastopol, Lord Raglan had ordered redoubts to be thrown up on the heights which run across the plain, at the bottom of which the town of Balaclava is situated'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Tchorgoun on the Tchornaya, 1856: A Village on the Brink of Battle This evocative image captures the quaint village of Tchorgoun, nestled on the banks of the Tchornaya (Chorna) River in Crimea during the Crimean War. The year was 1856, and the tranquility of this rural scene was about to be shattered by the looming threat of conflict. The serene landscape, dotted with cypress trees, presents a stark contrast to the impending military action. The village, with its rustic buildings and simple way of life, appears oblivious to the ominous presence of the Russian forces gathering in the hills nearby. General Liprandi had amassed a large army, hidden from view, threatening to disrupt the British communication lines between the harbor and the defensive lines surrounding Sebastopol. The British, aware of the Russian forces, responded by constructing redoubts on the nearby hills to protect their vital supply lines. The ominous clouds gathering on the horizon hint at the impending Battle of Balaclava, one of the most significant engagements of the Crimean War. This engraving, taken from the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the geography and regionalism of the Crimean peninsula during a pivotal moment in history. The image, a testament to the power of the press, transports us back in time, allowing us to witness the beauty of the countryside and the looming specter of war.
