Tetley shire horses in the Shambles, York, North Yorkshire, 1969. Artist: Michael Walters

Tetley shire horses in the Shambles, York, North Yorkshire, 1969. The world famous shire horses gave service to the company for 184 years and started their work when Joshua Tetley established his brewery in Leeds in 1822, and used the horses to pull the drays. As deliveries of the barrels started to be made by lorry, the shire horses were kept on for ceremonial and promotional purposes but the Danish owners of Tetleys decided to retire the horses in August 2006 due to the rising cost of their upkeep. The last horses used to pull the drays were retired to the Bankside Shire Stud in Thurstonland near Holmfirth

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print by Michael Walters captures a moment in history, showcasing the iconic Tetley shire horses in the charming setting of The Shambles, York, North Yorkshire in 1969. These magnificent creatures were an integral part of Tetley's brewery for an impressive 184 years. Originating from Joshua Tetley's establishment in Leeds back in 1822, these noble horses diligently pulled the drays to deliver barrels of beer. As time progressed and deliveries transitioned to lorries, the shire horses remained as symbols of tradition and promotion. However, due to increasing costs associated with their care, the Danish owners of Tetleys made the difficult decision to retire them in August 2006. The last group of dray-pulling horses found their peaceful retirement at Bankside Shire Stud near Holmfirth. In this image, we see a snapshot frozen in time - a picturesque street lined with medieval buildings and cobbled stones serving as a backdrop for these majestic animals. A man dressed impeccably donning a bowler hat stands alongside one horse-drawn dray while another gentleman tends to his duties nearby. This scene encapsulates not only an era but also represents the dedication and hard work that went into delivering quality beverages across England. Michael Walters' photography immortalizes this significant aspect of British culture and pays homage to both man and beast who played vital roles within the drinks industry during this period.
