EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a portrait of Sir Thomas More, an influential figure in English history. Created in 1933 by an unknown artist, this circular image captures the essence of More's character and accomplishments. Sir Thomas More (1478-1535) was not only a prominent lawyer but also a social philosopher, author, statesman, and renowned Renaissance humanist. Serving as an important advisor to King Henry VIII, he held the esteemed position of Lord Chancellor from 1529 to 1532. However, his unwavering commitment to his principles led him down a path that ultimately cost him his life. In recognition of his steadfast faith and martyrdom during the schism between the Church of England and Rome in the 16th century, Pope Pius XI canonized Sir Thomas More in 1935. Additionally, Pope John Paul II declared him patron saint of Catholic statesmen and politicians in 2000. The original source for this remarkable portrait is Hans Holbein's miniature painting. The photograph featured here is part of "Gestalten Der Weltgeschichte" a book containing cigarette-card portrait miniatures depicting significant figures from world history over four centuries. With its vibrant colors and attention to detail, this print serves as both a visual tribute to Sir Thomas More's legacy and a testament to the artistic talent that brought it to life nearly nine decades ago.
