Triumphal Arch at the Victoria-Avenue, Place de l'Hotel de Ville - from a photograph by Richebourg, Creator: Unknown

Triumphal Arch at the Victoria-Avenue, Place de l'Hotel de Ville - from a photograph by Richebourg, 1856. Paris celebrates the birth of Prince Louis Napoleon:.the beautifully artistic scene of the Triumphal Arch...This was the most striking novelty of the Fete. [There]...were two imitative buildings, in appearance as large as the Hotel de Ville itself, and to the eye, when viewed from the terrace made on purpose to see them from, they appeared as solid. This terrace, richly carpeted, was visited by almost all the company in the course of the evening. The French people were mightily tickled at this improvised city, representing the Place de l'Hotel de Ville as it will be when it is finished...St. Jacques La Boucherie was illuminated; and beyond the arch which unites the two card-houses a large extempore garden, illuminated, was seen in perspective'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the Triumphal Arch at the Victoria-Avenue, Place de l'Hotel de Ville in Paris during the celebrations for the birth of Prince Louis Napoleon in 1856. The Triumphal Arch, a symbol of victory and triumph, stands proudly against the night sky, adorned with intricate decorations and illuminated by thousands of lights. The arch was the most impressive novelty of the festivities, and it seemed even more grandiose when viewed from the terrace constructed specifically for the occasion. The terrace, lushly carpeted, was a popular destination for visitors throughout the evening. The French people were delighted by this temporary city, which made the Place de l'Hotel de Ville appear even grander than it already was. In the background, St. Jacques La Boucherie is illuminated, and beyond the arch, an extemporaneously lit garden can be seen in perspective. This photograph, taken by the unknown photographer Richebourg, beautifully encapsulates the joy and excitement of the Parisian people during this historic moment.
