EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the aftermath of a dramatic event during the First World War: the destruction of three German Zeppelin airships in just three days. The image focuses on the wreckage of the L20, which came to rest in a Norwegian fjord in 1916. The photograph shows the captain and lieutenant of the L20, along with Norwegian officers, examining the stranded airship. The L20 was forced to abandon its mission after an unsuccessful attack on a British target and ultimately met its end in the icy waters of the Hafsfjord. The image is part of the "Collection de la Guerre IV" from the French publication "L'Illustration," which documented the major events of the war from January to June 1916. The photograph offers a glimpse into the human side of aerial warfare during this period, as well as the technical challenges of airship transport and the harsh realities of wartime.
