Turtle, submarine designed by David Bushnell, 1787

Turtle, submarine designed by David Bushnell, 1787. Bushnell (1742-1824) built the Turtle, the first American submarine, in 1776. The Turtle was powered by a propeller operated by its single occupant turning a handle and would normally float with approximately six inches of exposed surface. The volume of air in the vessel was sufficient for it to remain submerged for up to 30 minutes. Several unsuccessful attempts were made to use the Turtle to deliver and attach underwater bombs to British warships during the American War of Independence

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the remarkable Turtle submarine, designed by David Bushnell in 1787. As a concept ahead of its time, this innovative creation showcases the ingenuity and scientific prowess of America during its early years. The Turtle was not only the first American submarine but also a symbol of revolution and rebellion during the American War of Independence. Operated by a single occupant, this hand-cranked vessel featured a propeller that allowed it to navigate through water with precision. With approximately six inches exposed on the surface, it remained inconspicuous while carrying out its mission. The volume of air inside enabled it to stay submerged for up to 30 minutes, making it an effective tool for underwater warfare. Although several attempts were made to utilize the Turtle in delivering underwater bombs to British warships, they proved unsuccessful. Nevertheless, this engraving immortalizes an important chapter in American history when innovation met determination on the battlefield. As we gaze upon this print, we are reminded of how far transportation has come since then. This relic from the 18th century serves as a testament to human curiosity and our constant quest for progress. It is a powerful reminder that even in times of conflict and upheaval, creativity can flourish and shape nations. Through this image captured by Ann Ronan Pictures, we are transported back in time to witness one man's vision become reality—a vision that would forever leave its mark on both science and warfare.
