EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "View of Widtsoe area from general store," was captured by renowned American photographer Dorothea Lange in 1936. The image portrays a serene yet remote landscape in Utah, with the farmlands purchased under the Congressional Resettlement Administration lying at the foot of the valley. The general store, with its grocers shop and gas station, stands as a beacon of activity in the otherwise tranquil scene. The photograph was taken during the Great Depression, a period of severe economic hardship in the United States. The Farm Security Administration (FSA), under the New Deal, was established to provide relief and support to rural communities affected by the Depression. Lange, working for the FSA, documented the lives of these communities, capturing their struggles and resilience. The general store, with its office and petrol pump, served as a vital hub for the community. The snow-covered mountains in the background add to the seasonal charm of the scene. The image is a poignant reminder of the harsh realities of rural life during the Depression era, as well as the determination and resourcefulness of the people living through it. The photograph, which is a nitrate negative, was taken by Dorothea Lange, also known as Dorothea Margaretta Nutzhorn Taylor. It was later acquired by the Office of War Information (OWI) and is now part of the extensive collection at the Library of Congress.
