EDITORS COMMENTS
William Prynne (Natus 1600 Denatus 1669), 1811: A Portrait of a Prominent English Lawyer, Politician, and Puritan This engraving, titled "William Prynne (Natus 1600 Denatus 1669)," is a portrait of the English lawyer, politician, and Puritan leader, William Prynne. The portrait was created by Robert Dunkarton and is part of the collection "Portraits of characters illustrious in British History from the beginning of the reign of Henry the Eighth to the end of the reign of James the Second," published in London in 1815. William Prynne was born in 1600 and died in 1669. He was a prominent figure during the 17th century in England, known for his legal career, political activities, and strong Puritan beliefs. Prynne was educated at the University of Oxford and went on to become a barrister at the Middle Temple. He was also a prolific writer, penning numerous works on law, politics, and religion. Prynne's political career began in the House of Commons, where he was a Member of Parliament for several terms. He was a vocal critic of the Stuart monarchy and its policies, particularly those related to the Church of England. In 1633, Prynne was imprisoned for his outspokenness and was later tried and punished for seditious libel. He was fined, had his ears cropped, and was banned from publishing or speaking in public for the rest of his life. Despite his punishment, Prynne continued to write and advocate for Puritan causes. He is best known for his work "Histriomastix," a critique of the English stage, which led to the closure of the theaters in 1642. Prynne's portrait, as depicted in this engraving, shows him as a serious, stern man, dressed in the clothing of the time, with a quill pen in hand, symbolizing his writing career. The portrait is a testament to Prynne's significant contributions to English history, particularly in the areas of law, politics, and religion during the 17th century.
