In this evocative black-and-white photograph, the paddle steamer Sandown gracefully approaches Sandown Pier on the Isle of Wight in August 1939. The pier, with its distinctive curved shape, stretches out into the English Channel, providing a picturesque welcome to the historic vessel. Sandown Pier, originally much shorter than it appears in this image, underwent an extension in 1895. This expansion included the addition of a new pavilion and steamer landing stage, which were intended to attract tourism to Sandown and offer a range of entertainments, such as a band and a ballroom. The Southern Railways PS Sandown, a staple of the Portsmouth-Ryde service across the Solent between 1934 and 1964, can be seen here making its way towards the pier. The Sandown was a popular vessel, and its arrival at Sandown Pier would have been a much-anticipated event for locals and visitors alike. The pier's extension proved successful in attracting tourists, and the scene captured in this photograph represents a bygone era of seaside leisure and relaxation. The calm waters of the English Channel, dotted with small boats and other vessels, add to the serene atmosphere. This photograph, taken by Aerofilms, provides a unique perspective on Sandown Pier and the paddle steamer Sandown, offering a glimpse into the past and the rich maritime history of the Isle of Wight.
