Signs of the Zodiac in Early Color by John Bevis ÔÇô Aries ÔÇô March 21 ÔÇô April 20
This colorfully illustrated Star Chart for Aries has been completely art-worked from the Aries plate featured on John Beviss Star Charts of the signs of the Zodiac by John Bevis c1747-1749.
These extremely detailed charts were compiled by Bevis, an eighteenth century physician-turned astronomer, whose other claim to fame is as the discoverer of the Crab Nebula,
John Bevis (November 10, 1695 - November 6, 1771) and the Uranographia
Historians of astronomy name four great celestial atlases: Bayer s, Hevelius s, Flamsteed s, and Bode s. To this, they add one great work that could have been: Beviss Uranographia.
John Bevis was an Oxford trained physician and amateur astronomer, Bevis set up a private observatory in North London in 1738, where he made observations, which led to his attempt to create the second British Celestial Atlas. In the mid 18th Century, Bevis produced his Uranographia Britannica, which was the first major celestial atlas published after the posthumous publication of the Atlas of John Flamsteed, Englands first Royal Astronomer.
Careful cross-referencing of the dedications on each work allows the date for the creation of the plates to be constrained to between 1747-1749. By comparing the titles suggested in the work to Royal Society and clergy records, upper and lower bounds of the date of creation can be made.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Aries plate from John Bevis' Star Charts of the signs of the Zodiac. The vibrant colors and intricate details bring this ancient astrological symbol to life. John Bevis, a physician-turned-astronomer in the 18th century, is renowned not only for his celestial charts but also as the discoverer of the Crab Nebula. His dedication to both medicine and astronomy led him to compile these incredibly detailed star charts. Bevis's Uranographia Britannica, published in the mid-18th century, was a significant contribution to celestial mapping. It became one of five great celestial atlases recognized by historians of astronomy. The careful cross-referencing of dedications on each work has allowed historians to narrow down the creation date for these plates between 1747-1749. By comparing titles suggested in Bevis's work with records from institutions like the Royal Society and clergy archives, they have been able to establish an approximate timeline. This particular print captures Aries, which represents those born between March 21st and April 20th. Its vivid colors and meticulous artwork make it a stunning addition to any collection or display dedicated to astrology or astronomical history.
