EDITORS COMMENTS
"This photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Alphonse (Al) Capone, the notorious Chicago gangland criminal, during a rare moment of leisure on his luxurious yacht, 'The Scotia,' around 1930. The image, taken during Capone's vacation in December of 1931, presents a striking contrast to his infamous reputation as the head of the Chicago Outfit and the 'Public Enemy No. 1.' Capone's yacht, a 140-foot long, custom-built vessel, was a symbol of his opulence and power. It was equipped with the latest amenities, including a swimming pool, a dance floor, and a fully-stocked bar. Capone, dressed casually in a sweater and slacks, is seen casting a fishing line into the calm waters, seemingly at peace with the world. Despite his criminal activities, Capone was known to enjoy the finer things in life, including expensive vacations, fine dining, and lavish entertainment. His yacht was a testament to his wealth and success, a symbol of his ability to evade the law and live a life of luxury. However, this idyllic scene was short-lived. Capone's criminal empire was crumbling, and the federal government was closing in on him. He was indicted on tax evasion charges in 1931 and sentenced to eleven years in prison in 1934. This photograph serves as a reminder of a bygone era, a time when crime and corruption reigned supreme in the streets of Chicago, and the criminal underworld's elite could still find moments of respite amidst their ill-gotten gains." This photograph is a historical document, providing a glimpse into the life of one of the most notorious criminals in American history. It is a reminder of a time when the line between the legal and the illegal was blurred, and the price of power was steep. This image, from the Mary Evans Picture Library, is a valuable addition to any collection of historical photographs or American crime history.
