EDITORS COMMENTS
Amadeo I of Savoy: Duke of Aosta and King of Spain (1871-1873) Amadeo I of Savoy, born in Turin on May 30, 1845, was a contemporary figure of the 19th century, who left an indelible mark on both Italian and Spanish history. This engraving captures Amadeo I in two significant roles of his life: as Duke of Aosta and later as King of Spain. The Duke of Aosta title was bestowed upon Amadeo I in 1847 by his father, Charles Albert, King of Sardinia. Amadeo I is depicted here in a military uniform, reflecting his militaristic background and his role as a duke in the House of Savoy. The moustache, a popular fashion accessory of the time, adds to his distinguished appearance. However, Amadeo I's most notable reign was as King of Spain, which began in 1871 and lasted only until 1873. His election was a result of political maneuvering, as Spain was in a state of instability following the Carlist Wars. Amadeo I's reign was marked by his progressive policies, including the establishment of a constitutional monarchy and the separation of church and state. Despite his efforts to modernize Spain, Amadeo I faced significant opposition, leading to his abdication in 1873. This engraving serves as a reminder of a pivotal moment in European history, when a ruler from one country attempted to bring about change in another, with mixed results. This 19th-century engraving is a testament to the complexities of European politics during the age of imperialism and nationalism, and Amadeo I's story continues to be an intriguing chapter in the history of both Italy and Spain.
