EDITORS COMMENTS
December 1922: A New Beginning for Barnardos Home Boys at Tilbury Docks This poignant photograph captures a group of Barnardos Home Boys, orphaned or abandoned children in the care of the Barnardo's Children's Charity, as they bid farewell to their homeland and embarked on a long journey to a new life in Australia. The image was taken at Tilbury Docks, Essex, England, as the boys prepared to board the SS Ormonde, which would carry them across the treacherous waters of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans to the land down under. The Barnardo's organization, founded by Dr. Thomas Barnardo in 1867, had been dedicated to the care and education of orphaned, abandoned, and neglected children for over half a century. In the early 20th century, the charity expanded its efforts to provide opportunities for its wards to emigrate to countries like Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, offering them a chance at a better future. The boys in this photograph, dressed in their best clothes and clutching small belongings, were filled with a mix of excitement, apprehension, and sadness as they stood on the dockside, looking out at the vast expanse of the Thames Estuary. Many of them had never seen the sea before, and the prospect of a new life in a far-off land was both thrilling and terrifying. The journey to Australia would take several weeks, and the boys would face numerous challenges along the way. But the promise of a fresh start, a chance to build a new life, and the hope of a better future kept their spirits high. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and determination of these children, who, despite their difficult beginnings, went on to make new lives for themselves in a new land.
