EDITORS COMMENTS
Bosworth Field, Leicestershire, 21 August 1485: A Turning Point in English History This evocative image of Bosworth Field, the site of the fateful battle that marked the end of the Plantagenet dynasty and the beginning of the Tudor era in England, transports us back to a pivotal moment in history. The year is 1485, and Richard III, the last Plantagenet king, faces defeat at the hands of Henry Tudor, Duke of Richmond. Richard III, a controversial and divisive figure, had seized the throne in 1483 following the mysterious disappearance of his nephews, the Princes in the Tower. His reign was marked by political instability and fear, with many nobles and commoners longing for a change. Henry Tudor, a descendant of the House of Lancaster, had spent years in exile in France, gathering support for his claim to the throne. With the help of French forces and a sizeable army of English rebels, he challenged Richard III to battle on Bosworth Field. The battle, which took place on 21 August 1485, was a hard-fought contest. Richard III's army, though initially successful, was eventually overwhelmed by Henry Tudor's forces. In the chaos of the final stages of the battle, Richard III was killed, and Henry Tudor was declared the victor. With Richard III's defeat, the Tudor dynasty was established, and Henry Tudor assumed the throne as Henry VII. The Battle of Bosworth Field marked the end of the Middle Ages in England and ushered in a new era of Tudor rule that would last for over a century. This print, circa 1840, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of political upheaval and historical significance. The image, which may have been inspired by contemporary accounts or artistic interpretations of the battle, invites us to reflect on the rich history of England and the events that shaped its future.
