EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant commemorative card pays tribute to the historic Battle of the River Plate, which took place on December 13, 1939, during the early stages of World War II. The card features an evocative map of the South Atlantic, with the location of the battle marked by a red cross. At the heart of the map lies the estuary of the River Plate, where the German cruiser Admiral Graf Spee, under the command of Captain Hans Langsdorff, met its end. The Graf Spee, a powerful pocket battleship, had been wreaking havoc on Allied shipping lanes in the Atlantic Ocean since the beginning of the war. In response, the British Royal Navy dispatched three cruisers - HMS Exeter, Ajax, and Achilles - to intercept the German raider. The resulting battle, which took place off the coast of Uruguay, saw the Graf Spee sustain significant damage and ultimately be scuttled by her own crew to avoid capture. This card serves as a poignant reminder of the naval warfare that defined the early years of World War II, and the pivotal role that the Battle of the River Plate played in turning the tide against the German Navy in the Atlantic. The image of the map, with its red cross marking the site of the battle, is a powerful symbol of the historical significance of this event, and a testament to the enduring legacy of the brave men who fought in it.
