EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning tapestry, created during the Early Modern Era, depicts the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon, with their five children: Isabella of Asturias, Juan, Joanna, Mary, and Catherine of Aragon. Isabella I of Castile, born in 1451, is shown wearing the royal mantle of Castile, while Ferdinand II of Aragon, born in 1452, wears the royal mantle of Aragon. Their eldest child, Isabella, is depicted as the Princess of Asturias, the heir to the throne. Their second eldest child, Juan, is shown as the Prince of Asturias and Girona, the future heir to the throne of Aragon. Their third child, Joanna, is depicted as the Queen of Castile, married to Philip the Handsome. Their fourth child, Mary, is shown as the Spanish infanta, while their fifth child, Catherine, is the future Queen of England, the first wife of Henry VIII. The tapestry also features two other important figures: Isabella I of Castile's sister, Joan the Mad, who was Queen of Castile, married to Philip the Handsome, and Maria of Aragon, who was the second wife of Portuguese King Manuel I. This tapestry, located in the Camara Regia in Segovia's Alcazar (castle) in Spain, is a testament to the complex web of relationships and alliances during the 15th and 16th centuries in the Iberian Peninsula. It showcases the power and influence of the Catholic Monarchs and their family, who ruled over the Kingdoms of Castile and Leon and left an indelible mark on Spanish history.
