Mine and Countermine - A Tunnelling Standoff Between British and German Soldiers, by Heath Robinson, 1915 In this humorous and imaginative cartoon by British illustrator Heath Robinson, we find ourselves in the midst of the Great War's underground battlefield, where two soldiers, one British and one German, are engaged in a seemingly endless tunnelling standoff. The scene is set in the muddy, claustrophobic confines of a trench, with both soldiers diligently digging away at their respective tunnels, each determined to outmaneuver the other. The British sapper, with a determined look on his face, is hard at work, his pickaxe striking the ground with a rhythmic thud. His counterpart, the German soldier, is shown burrowing so deeply that his helmet and boots have disappeared from view, leaving only his legs and torso visible.
