EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking portrait, we behold Catherine Howard, Countess of Newburgh, a noblewoman of the English Restoration era. Born as Catherine Howard, daughter of Edward Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk, and Frances de Vere, she was a grandchild of Thomas, 7th Earl of Arundel, a prominent figure in English history. The exact date of this portrait is uncertain, but it is believed to have been painted around 1650, making Catherine approximately 35 years old at the time. Her elegant attire, adorned with lace collars and cuffs, speaks of her aristocratic status. The intricate embroidery on her dress and the delicate lace ruff at her neck reveal the refined taste and affluence of the period. Catherine Howard's lineage can be traced back to some of the most influential families in English history. Her paternal grandfather, Thomas Howard, 7th Earl of Arundel, was a patron of the arts and a collector of ancient Roman antiquities. He was also a favorite of King James I, who appointed him as Lord Chamberlain and Master of the Horse. The Countess of Newburgh's maternal grandparents, Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, and Elizabeth Trentham, were also of significant historical importance. Oxford was a prolific writer and is believed to be the true author of several works attributed to Shakespeare. Despite her distinguished lineage, Catherine Howard's life was marked by tragedy. She was married twice, first to Sir Edward Montagu, with whom she had two children, and later to Sir Edward Howard, with whom she had no issue. Both marriages ended in widowhood, and Catherine died in 1650, leaving behind a legacy as a noblewoman of the English Restoration era. This portrait offers a glimpse into the opulent world of the English aristocracy during the 17th century, revealing the elegance, refinement, and historical significance of its subjects.
