EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts a significant moment in the history of the Crusades: the meeting between Philippe August, King of France, and Henry II, King of England, in the town of Gisors, France, on January 21, 1188. The original painting, created by Gillot Saint-Evre in 1839, has been beautifully preserved and is now held in the National Library of Catalonia in Barcelona, Spain. The image captures the regal grandeur of the two monarchs, each dressed in rich robes and adorned with the symbols of their power. Philippe August, depicted on the left, wears a crown and holds a scepter, while Henry II, on the right, clutches a staff topped with a cross, symbolizing his role as a crusader. The background is filled with the hustle and bustle of the medieval town, with soldiers, knights, and townspeople milling about. The meeting between Philippe August and Henry II was a pivotal moment in the Third Crusade. The two kings had been at odds for some time, and their encounter in Gisors marked the beginning of a fragile alliance against Saladin, the Muslim sultan who had seized Jerusalem from Christian control in 1187. Despite their personal animosity, the two leaders recognized the importance of unity in the face of a common enemy, and their alliance ultimately helped to turn the tide of the Crusade. This engraving provides a vivid glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of chivalry, intrigue, and momentous historical events. The rich colors and intricate details of the original painting are faithfully reproduced, making this a truly stunning addition to any historical collection.
