EDITORS COMMENTS
This 17th century print depicts Daniel's visions as described in the Book of Daniel, chapter 7, from the Old Testament of the Bible. The vision, which occurred around 550 BC, is a pivotal moment in biblical prophecy, revealing the future empires of Assyria, Persia, Greece, and Rome. Daniel, a Hebrew prophet, is shown in the center of the image, prostrate in prayer before God. Surrounding him are four mysterious beasts, each representing one of the four kingdoms. The first beast, with the wings of an eagle, represents the Babylonian Empire, which had previously conquered Judah. The second beast, with the wings of a lion and the mouth of a bear, represents the Medo-Persian Empire. The third beast, with the body of a leopard and four heads, represents the Grecian Empire, and the fourth beast, with the body of a fearsome dragon, represents the Roman Empire. Above the fourth beast, the Ancient of Days is seated on a throne, surrounded by a radiant cloud and holding a scroll. The Son of Man, represented by a figure with the head of a man and the body of a human, appears before the Ancient of Days, receiving dominion, glory, and a kingdom that will never be destroyed. This intricately detailed print, created around 1690, offers a glimpse into the rich symbolism and intrigue of biblical prophecy, as well as the artistic styles of the 17th century. The print's use of bold lines, dramatic contrasts, and intricate details bring the vision to life, making it a fascinating addition to any collection of religious art or biblical history.
