EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Dormouse, Glis glis, and Rat, Rattus norvegicus," is an intricate work of art from Frederic Cuvier's "Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals," published in Paris, France, in 1816. The illustration was created by the skilled painter of natural history, Jean Gabriel Pretre, and meticulously engraved by Victor, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Pretre, born in 1780, began his career as a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist at the Museum of Natural History. The engraving showcases two distinct species: the Dormouse, Glis glis, and the Rat, Rattus norvegicus. The Dormouse, also known as the edible dormouse or hazel dormouse, is depicted with its eyes closed and curled up in a ball, clinging to a tree branch with its tail wrapped around it. This nocturnal creature is native to Europe and is known for its hibernation habits and fondness for nuts. In contrast, the Rat, Rattus norvegicus, is shown on the ground, with its ears perked up and its body alert. Originally from Asia, this rat species, also known as the brown rat or the Norwegian rat, is an omnivore and a common pest in many parts of the world. The intricate details of this engraving, with its delicate shading and vibrant colors, provide an accurate representation of these two mammals and offer a glimpse into the natural history of the early 19th century. This beautiful piece of art is a testament to the skill and dedication of the artists and scientists of the time, who meticulously documented the natural world for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
